Note: Heating Cutting Tools for Forging
Objective:
To heat cutting tools prior to forging
End Product:
Cutting tools
Equipment:
Ambrell EKOHEAT 135 kW, 50-150 kHz induction heating system equipped with a remote workhead A single position, multiple-turn helical coil designed specifically for this application
Materials:
Magnetic steel parts (cutting tools)
Temperature:
2150 ºF (1177 ºC)
Frequency:
68 kHz
Testing:
An infrared pyrometer was used to monitor the temperature of the part during the heating cycle. Two parts were tested. It took 5.5 seconds to heat a knife blade to the required temperature and 6 seconds to heat shears to the required temperature. This is a new process for the client.
Benefits:
-
Speed: The client set objectives of 6-7 seconds for the shears and 5-6 seconds for the knife blade, which our process achieved.
-
Precise, repeatable heating: Induction targets the precise portion of the part that requires heating every time, presenting another advantage over other heating methods.
-
THE LAB experience: Applications engineers were able to design a solution that met their requirements
