Objective

A company had been using a flame for brazing copper assemblies to make electrical components, but they contacted THE LAB at Ambrell because they wanted to see if induction might be a better fit for their process. Speed, safety and repeatability were their primary reasons for evaluating induction heating.

Evaluation

THE LAB determined that an Ambrell EKOHEAT 50 kW, 5-15 kHz induction heating power supply with a custom-designed helical coil would work well for this application.

Care was taken to ensure the parts could easily be placed in and removed from the heating zone. Initial tests were conducted to optimize power delivery to the assembly. Testing confirmed the viability of the application within the desired 30-second cycle time.

Solution

As mentioned, speed and repeatability were the two primary reasons the client was assessing induction, and induction was beneficial on both fronts. With a torch, operator skill is critical, making repeatability an issue at times. With induction they will see the same result time after time. Induction also delivers less heat into the work environment and there is no open flame, enhancing safety. Finally, the expertise of THE LAB allowed the client to have peace-of-mind knowing their application would work prior to investing in induction equipment.

If you have an application you'd like tested by THE LAB at Ambrell, contact us today to take advantage of free induction heating application testing. We'll send your parts back for inspection, along with passing along a video showing you the heating process. You can even visit us at one of our two applications lab to view the testing in-person or observe it live with our Remote Lab Service.More Brazing application notes
