Debonding rubber coating from a steel casted water valve

Objective

To heat a steel, rubber-coated water valve to 500 ºF (260 ºC) and debond the rubber coating.

End Product

Water valve

Equipment

Ambrell EKOHEAT® 15 kW, 50-150 kHz solid state induction power supply with a workhead and coil specifically designed for this application.

Materials

Steel water valve, 6” (152.4mm) diameter with rubber coating

Temperature

500 ºF (260 ºC)

Frequency

80 kHz

Testing

A four-turn helical coil was used for debonding the rubber coating from the water valve. Power was applied for two minutes to heat the water valve slowly to 500 ºF (260 ºC) so the metal casting was not damaged.

The part was taken out of the coil and the rubber coating was easily removed. The application testing met all of the client’s objectives.

Benefits

  • No part damage

  • More environmentally-friendly process since noxious chemicals are not used

  • Even distribution of heating

  • Consistent and repeatable results
